Celebrity biopics have not been going over too well these past few months. The motion picture from Lifetime for the late Aaliyah was a total disaster. And their effort honoring the late Whitney Houston was only slightly better. So the pending N.W.A biopic that is slated to hit the big screen later this year had fans on the fence a bit. However, an official trailer for the project dropped a few days ago that changed the dynamic completely.
It opens with two of the originators of the group Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, taking a trip down memory lane before giving way to a glimpse of the flick. The opening is compelling and the cast does an awesome job of representing one of the most influential and iconic groups in Hip-Hop history as we see snippets of their meager beginnings to their rise to fame. Because the group is such a big deal, portraying them and telling their story is no easy task. But if the trailer is any indication, it looks like director F. Gary Gray nails it. Straight Outta Compton is scheduled to hit theaters this Summer on August 14th. Looks like it could be the biggest film in Hip-Hop since 8 Mile. Much love to the West Coast. Can’t wait to see the movie. -MinM
