$killz & Monk-bmsRustik

Local artists Monk-bms and Rustik hosted part one of their album release party this past Friday night (6/22). The duo took over Crisp Pizza Bar & Lounge along with DJ Presentabl and local clothing company BMA Clothing. The deejay kept the atmosphere live and entertaining by playing a variety of tunes with a Dub-Step / Techno kind of twist. Monk and Rustik charmingly worked the venue, chopped it up with guests, took pictures, and handed out download cards for their collaboration album Studio Gangsters. Really special attendees even got to hang out in the upper level of the venue and share a drink with the fellas. That’s a pretty cool treat. Once the two had a chance to make their rounds and have some fun, they took the stage.

This time around they performed on the lower level of the venue. This put them front and center. So more guests were able to enjoy the show and it gave them a little bit more room to let loose. The guys performed a few cuts from the first half of their album. This included bringing back the infamous $killz (Sypher Squad) for another blazing rendition of their track “I Be F–king High.” An additional standout was the performance of the very first cut on the project, “2.4.7.” The guys did an adequate job and served up a lot of passion and personality. Following the show, Monk and Rustik cleared the stage for the runway portion of the event. 12 lovely ladies took the stage and displayed a wide range of gear from BMA Clothing. The ladies rocked everything from hip printed tees to hoodies. They looked fierce and the crowd responded warmly to them. It should also be noted that local creative consultant Elle Hornsby helped contribute to the fashion segment. After the models did their thing, the crowd was dispersed. Those who came late got the chance to grab an album card from Monk or Rustik and everybody got to check out the BMA Clothing booth that was set up for the night. And of course the party kicked back into full swing until last call. All in all, it was a pretty good experience.

The second part of the album release party takes place this coming Friday (6/29). It has been dubbed “Ballers, Ballerinas, & Body Paint.” This affair will include 12 models covered in custom body paint designs and rocking tutus. Definitely something one has to see in person. Plus, DJ Daddy LongLegs is returning to the one’s and two’s. Finally, Monk and Rustik will be performing songs from the second half of their album. This will include a special appearance  from previously featured and Higher Education Records emcee Mad Static. Doesn’t it all sound just a little exciting? Readers can get more info here.

**My Two Cents: I had a fun time at part one of the release party. The atmosphere was decent. Also, Monk and Rustik were very attentive and welcoming hosts. They put on a quality show too and impressively dealt with a few hiccups. The models were on point. They worked their outfits and seemed to have a good time on stage. And the music was dope. Monk and Rustik have a great chemistry and their styles fit together nicely. Be sure to click that link and preview/purchase the album. It’s worth the money. I am really looking forward to part two of the release party. I am hoping it’s going to be a creative and photo worthy night. -MinM
