Introducing Willy G, an Indie rapper from Ewa Beach, HI. Growing up, Willy went through the struggles of poverty that many families face in Hawaii. Everyone thinks it’s paradise but outside of the tourist spots, it’s far from it. That’s the main reason why Willy G decided to drop his remix of Goapele’s “Closer.” Many of the people in this video are no longer here or are battling with drugs. Willy wanted to make a video not only for those closest to him but also for his people (in Hawaii and beyond) to let them know it’s never too late to make your situation better. He summarizes the purpose of the song & video beautifully with the following statement: “You’re never too old, you’re never too poor – it takes one chance, one positive move to change your life around … just like I did mine.”

The “Closer” Remix is a cool on the rise, backstory-esque song. With a very mellow beat and straight from the heart lyrics, Willy G delivers a nice introduction into who he is. However, I wouldn’t want this to be the track to introduce myself to the world with. It’s a cool track, no doubt, but it’s more of a third single rather than the lead. As for the video, it puts you in the mind of other Hip-Hop joints that have home videos playing as the rapper spits in front of them. The most recent example being, J. Cole‘s “Apparently” video. All in all, this is a chill track with a decent video. Now that we know where Willy G is coming from, it’s time for him to show us what he’s got. –Pooh Bailey
