Actress/model Yaya DaCosta (America’s Next Top Model) has been tapped to play the coveted role of Whitney Houston in the first biopic about the late legendary singer. She beat out fellow actress Meagan Good, Houston’s own daughter Bobbi Kristina, and the fan nominated Paula Patton for the part. The biopic will appear on the Lifetime network and is being directed by the fabulous Angela Bassett. The film will follow Houston’s rise to fame along with her turbulent relationship with the infamous Bobby Brown. It will specifically zone in on the years 1989 to 1994. This marks Bassett’s directorial debut and the movie is scheduled to hit the small screen sometime next year. Bassett took on the project due to her admiration & respect of both Houston and Brown as well as her fascination with their relationship/marriage. However, this will be nothing new to DaCosta. Though the world came to know her for modeling, she has over 20 years of acting under her belt, which includes approximately ten plus films, the most recent being The Butler. She has also had major television roles like her time spent on the long term running soap opera, All My Children. The crucial questions now become can DaCosta carry a tune and who will take on the role of Bobby Brown? Both will be very important components in making the biopic a success.
