The Hip-Hop community took an unexpected blow recently when the news broke that rapper Prodigy (Mobb Deep) had passed away. There is no verified cause of death at this time but sources speculate that it is linked to the rapper’s life long battle with the disease, sickle cell anemia.

He had been hospitalized due to complications from the disease just a few days prior to his death. The rapper was in Las Vegas for a Mobb Deep performance when his health took a turn. Prodigy was only 42 years old at the time of his passing.

As one half of the prominent New York duo Mobb Deep, Prodigy rose to fame along with fellow member Havoc in the mid 90’s. Their album The Infamous went gold and contained one of their biggest singles to date, “Shook Ones Pt II.” From there the duo would go on to release several studio albums, resulting in eight total with their last one, The Infamous Mobb Deep dropping in 2014. Prodigy himself released an assortment of solo efforts and collaborations along with dabbling in the literary and acting worlds. His last offering came about in January of this year. It was coined Hegelian Dialectic (The Book of Revelation). And of course he got caught up in his fair share of legal drama and Hip-Hop beefs as well. The rapper had a long and eventful career to say the least. Scores of his peers and fans alike took to the web to express their grief and share the impact that the East Coast veteran had on them. His legacy is a strong one and it will most definitely continue to thrive in the hearts of those in the Hip-Hop community for countless years to come. The Illixer staff would like to send our deepest sympathies to Prodigy’s friends & family members. Rest In Paradise P, Mobb Deep 4ever indeed. -MinM
