“Ready To Go” (Preview)

Toine’ Hicks is another Milwaukee artist from the Music Done Right camp. He was attracted to words and rhythms early on in life and thus started his creative journey with poetry and storytelling. Once he hit high school, he made the transition into a rapping via battles and cyphers. His music is described as authentic with a major allure factor. MDR has started to push certain songs from the promising rapper, as well as call attention to his In A Min LP. One of said songs is a track entitled “Ready To Go.”

“Ready To Go” is featured on the earlier mentioned LP. The production here is decent. It contains minute musical elements, a suave cadence, and a down to earth vibe. The hook is good. The delivery is spotless and the lyrics are quality. The verses are solid. Toine’ has a consistent flow, fair wordplay, and conventional rhymes. He could have been just a little more creative to make the verses standout better though. However, some citable lines include: “Yo who ready to war with the warriors. Score with the scorers. And ball with the ballers right quick. Yo we ready to glow. I’m ready to beam. I’m ready to play the hardest for me and my team. I can play the wing. I can be like Pip. Or I can be like Mike and just take the s–t.” Interesting lines with some cool basketball references at the end. Overall, this track is respectable. It could have been taken up a notch lyrically but it still has enough substance to make it worth a listen.

As stated in the beginning, Toine’ has a couple of different singles in rotation. One of which is another track off of the In A Min LP called “Top Of The World.” It serves as a bonus track on the project. It’s an uptempo number with likeable rhymes and a free spirited vibe. All in all, this song is fresh and the strongest of the three. And a third single that is being promoted is titled “Keep Dreamin.” It does not appear on the LP but it is on a mixtape dubbed W.A.R. The middling pace and light components have a certain charm to them. Couple that with the meaningful hook and relatable story telling and this song is a hit. In the end, it’s definitely a must hear.

**My Two Cents: Toine’ has a strong flow and a commendable way with words. He just needs to give his rhymes that extra something a bit more often. Otherwise nothing bad to say about the budding emcee. Check out the LP over at that Dat Piff. Stay tuned to the site as well. Heard from a little birdy at MDR that Toine’ might have a video or two dropping soon. Oh and check him out on Twitter as well. -MinM
