The Summertime brings about a lot of things: a break from school, vacations from work, music festivals, etc. For dance fans it means a new season of FOX’s hit show, So You Think You Can Dance. The show is more based in formal styles of dance but over the past few years it has really started showing love to the genre of Hip-Hop. This year’s auditions included the dance forms of: bone breaking, Detroit jit, b-boying, animation, traditional Hip-Hop, and more. Plus, quite a few Hip-Hop heads got through to the loved & hated final round in Las Vegas, Nevada. So thought it would be cool to pay homage to the body movement aspect of the Hip-Hop culture by revisiting a dance scene from the classic Urban film, House Party.

House Party was released in 1990 and would go on to spawn three sequels. The series of movies featured rappers/actors Kid ‘N Play (with the exception of the fourth one which starred R&B group Immature aka IMX) portraying themselves and centered around all of the trouble the duo seemed to always get themselves into. The story-lines were comedic and very entertaining. The movies became known for something besides just the laughs they provided though. The music as well as the dance scenes in the flicks made major impressions on viewers. Above is the first of said scenes. It entails Kid ‘N Play battling it out at a party against their friends Sidney (Tisha Campbell-Martin) and Sharane (A.J. Johnson). So there is a nice girls vs. boys element present too. The song they are jamming to is “Ain’t My Type of Hype” by Full Force. Full Force played the antagonists in the film and reprised their roles in the second movie as well. As a whole, it was a good competition.

**My Two Cents: The first three House Party flicks are some of my favorite movies of all time. The music was epic, the dancing was hot, and I got a real kick out of the plots. They were just all around great films and are real classics in my opinion. I am also a huge fan of dance reality shows. So You Think You Can Dance is one of the better ones out there and since it’s just a couple of weeks into the new season, I thought this would be a great post for Throwback Thursday. Don’t forget if you have something you would like to see on Throwback Thursday, hit us up and let us know. -MinM
