Decided to change things up a little bit. So say hello to Street Soul duo Lucid. Lucid is a singing duo that is based in the Netherlands. It consists of members Janice and Juliet. Street Soul is what their style has been dubbed. It’s a combination of: R&B, Soul, and Hip-Hop. The ladies are proud dreamers who have done away with the typical career based train of thought. They each grew up immersed in music in a variety of ways including: singing lessons, piano playing, play acting, etc. They crossed paths while attending university. After a record label internship here in the states, they decided to place school on the back burner and dive into the world of music full time. They officially joined forces in 2012 and have been going strong ever since. They have done their fair share of networking and performing both overseas and in the U.S., leaving their mark on locales such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York. Currently, the divas are putting the finishing touches on their debut album Poisoned Pawns. Included on the collective is their newly released song “Celebration” which has an accompanying video as well.
“Celebration” was produced by Timo. The production here is enjoyable. The polished base, funky secondary details, breezy tempo, and good-natured vibe work seamlessly together. The hook is attractive. The vocals are graceful and the lyrics are lighthearted. They do an excellent job of summarizing the message behind the track: “Tonight we’re gonna lean back. Kick off the shoes. Get the feet up on the desk. Tonight we’re gonna relax. Sip a little something. Music playing in the back. Cause I think we in need of a moment to look back. Take a minute to take in the progress. See we moving so fast. We need to slow it down. Appreciate how far we’ve come. Celebrate where we are now.” That’s a sentiment that will surely resonate with listeners on a universal level. The verses are mint. The ladies utilize candied balanced harmonies and flattering lyrics. They continue the optimistic theme of the hook effortlessly. All in all, this is a fun neat track.
The visuals for the record take place in Brussels, Belgium. It’s shot in a vlog fashion. The camera basically just journeys with the ladies as they venture throughout the city. They engage in a little retail therapy, check out some specialty shops, grab some food, sight see, and just have a carefree time. They expose the viewer to some gorgeous architecture and the weather conditions were definitely in their favor. Additionally, the twosome bring a great whimsical energy to the mix via amusing antics and dancing. The flick closes out with the ladies taking part in a mini celebration all their own. In the end, this was a refreshing number.
**My Two Cents: The ladies of Lucid are awesome. I think they have a wonderful sound and I really got a kick out of both the song and the video. The purpose behind the track was very honorable and the content was superb. The beat was pretty snazzy too. The video was cute. The ladies captured Brussels in a way that makes you wish you were there with them and the ending was a becoming nod to the single. I definitely want to hear more of what the ladies have to offer. Poisoned Pawns will be a 10 track piece done with the Street Soul style as well as a little Trap. The content will all be written by the ladies themselves. The subject matter will revolve around auto-biographical and self-empowerment elements. And there is also a tour in the works that will allow the ladies to express the music visually as well as through dance. So there is a lot to look forward to.
