The ever so multi-talented Jovan decided to share a new track with the site a couple of days ago. The Chicago artist/photographer/filmmaker is preparing to release her second EP.  The project is titled Resonate and is tentatively scheduled for release later this year. The song is said to be just a snippet of what’s in store but it sets a great tone. It’s called “Nite Last” and there is a guest appearance from R&B singer J Harmony. The production here is finespun. The low level bass, composed groovy background details, moderate pace, and even-tempered vibe fit hand in hand. Additionally, there is a sampling of the classic “Last Night” by old school R&B group Az Yet. It is most prominent in the opening of the track and is well utilized. [csd] did a nice job of playing up the 90’s R&B feel. The hook is good. The delivery is extremely pleasing to the ear and the lyrics are on point. As this is a shorter track, there is only one verse. It’s a hot one though. Jovan provides a fresh flow, quality wordplay, and rhymes from deep within. She takes her despair and heartache and uses it to convey a striking message about love and self-worth. A few memorable lines are: “While I’m here, you took advantage when you had it. You didn’t wanna lose me so you quickly ran to grab it. So you can’t even have it, no more. The type of love that I give isn’t sold in the stores. I am not available behind these closed doors. And it’s not for short-term so better find you a whore. I only want more, cause I deserve the best. And you’re aware of that, so you packed your bags and left. Don’t think I hate you, but I’m feeling kinda livid. But you are forgiven, and still in my retention. It may be just a given.” Those bars provide a very solid ending to the selection. Overall, this is an enjoyable cut.
**My Two Cents: I liked this track for a couple of different reasons. It showed off a softer side to Jovan than what she shared for her first feature on the site. It’s always nice to experience the range of an artist. Also, 90’s R&B is my favorite style of music. So I always get a kick out of any remixes, samples, etc. Finally, Jovan and J Harmony really did their thing. They gave a great execution and the content was refreshing. My only issue was that the song wasn’t longer. I’m definitely curious to hear what other gems await on Resonate. -MinM
