This past Sunday (6/15) marked the five year anniversary for J. Cole‘s sophomore mixtape, The Warm Up. The tape was one of his most successful projects to date and helped to launch his career into overdrive. So in honor of the special occasion, the North Carolina rapper bestowed three gifts upon his supporters. He penned an open, heartfelt, and inspirational letter about the tape and it’s significance which can be read here. He decided to bring back a mini version of the Dollar & A Dream Tour where he will be performing tracks off of the tape exclusively. And last but certainly not least, he unleashed the long awaited visual for the tape’s smash hit single “Lights Please.” Get the rundown on the video after the break.

The video opens with J. Cole stopping by the apartment of a female. She lets him wearing only a towel. They enter the dwelling, she drops the towel, and makes her way to the shower. Cole briefly looks on from a distance. She exits the shower and rejoins Cole in her bedroom. The two proceed to indulge in a bit of adult recreational fun. The majority of the video centers around the couple’s time together. Additionally, there are solo shots of Cole on a roof and glimpses of him through the peephole of the apartment door. The vision concludes with Cole’s lady friend fast asleep on the bed while he gets dressed and makes a silent exit. All in all, it’s an adequate viewing.

**My Two Cents: I am a huge J. Cole fan. So I am very happy to witness all of his success. He is super talented and deserving. I can’t believe it’s been five years since The Warm Up already though. Man time flies. I wish him many more years of prosperity in the game. On another note, “Lights Please” is my jam just like most other Cole supporters. So I was geeked about the video. I have to say after a five year wait, it was a little underwhelming. It fit the context of the song and all but I feel like Cole could have done so much more. Then on top of that, it’s edited. But I guess it’s better than nothing. Congrats and Happy Anniversary J. Cole! -MinM
