On this day 41 years ago, the late great Aaliyah was brought into this world. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy is still celebrated by friends, family, and fans alike. She has some great solo hits but her collaborations with Hip-Hop artists were not to be slept on either. “Got To Give It Up” with Slick Rick falls into that category.

The single is a remake of the Marvin Gaye classic of the same name from 1977. Aaliyah chose the track because she wanted to incorporate fun party records into her One In A Million LP. She listened to the original selection with her uncle and the rest is pretty much history. Veteran rapper Slick Rick appears on the track with the late singer. He was out on work release and provides an excellent interpretation of the man in the club buying up the bar to Aaliyah’s more wallflower like persona. There were a couple of changes made to modernize the tune and there is also a sample of “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson in play too. The song was pretty well received upon it’s release and still has people moving & grooving to this very day.

“Got To Give It Up” is a site favorite for sure and so it seemed only fitting to revisit the record for the singer’s day of birth. So press play and enjoy the trip down memory lane. Happy Birthday Baby Girl, we are definitely still missing you down here. -MinM
