Funk Volume is a record label that also specializes in production, marketing, and promotions. They pride themselves on providing artists a place to do what they love without all the pressure and madness of typical mainstream labels. Also, they consider their artists some of the most talented and creative in the game. Their goal is to put out music and projects that can thrive amongst the best of the best. Their roster boasts names like: Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, DJ Hoppa, etc. They describe themselves as follows: “We are not a ‘movement,’ not a ‘gang,’ not a ‘squad’ or anything like that. Funk Volume is a COMMITMENT – to protect the integrity of the music and conduct our business properly. It is a commitment to HIP-HOP, to our FANS, and to each other (Facebook).” For more information about the company readers can check out their website.

Currently Funk Volume is running their popular contest, Don’t Funk Up Our Beats. This year makes for the fifth installment of the contest. It is said to be the largest online contest on the web. Basically, the company provided a series of beats for artists to choose from. Artists then downloaded the beat of their choice and recorded a video entry performing to the beat that they selected. From there, they uploaded the video to the contest’s Facebook Page. And now they must get their supporters to step up and vote like crazy. Everything kicked off on February 17th and ends on the 24th of this month. 25 finalists will be announced on the 27th and the winners will be announced on the 31st. There will be three winners total. The grand prize is $2,500 and the opportunity to open up at a Funk Volume show. Pretty sweet deal, huh? J.D. “The Chief” of Bass Head Music thought so too and thus he created his very own entry for the competition. His entry can be seen above. He chose to go with a heavy hitting beat with a darker tone. He also opted to go live with his performance. Which is unique because some artists chose to record their entries and do a music video style submission. He came with a rapid fire flow and quality cutting edge rhymes. The video ends on a lighter note with a brief cameo from another Bass Head Music member, Mista Marcus. All in all, this was a dope entry. If readers agree, J.D. needs you to go here and vote. Voting is allowed daily.

**My Two Cents: I am really feeling J.D.’s entry. I give him mad props for doing it live. I’ve seen a few other submissions and his definitely ranks in the top of the bunch. My second favorite would be Snow Tha Product‘s promo version. Hers can be viewed here. Wishing J.D. “The Chief” the best of luck. You definitely have The Illixer‘s vote! -MinM
