Bass Head Music – The Munchies (Mixtape Review)

The Munchies

Bass Head Music is an innovative Hip-Hop group here in Milwaukee, WI. Known for their wild party style performances, the fellas constantly push themselves to take their music and shows to new heights. In keeping with their unique brand, a majority of their songs are original creations done via their production company Deep6ix Productions. When they are not laying down tracks, the guys are all about hitting the stage and having a good time with their fans. They have shared the stage with some pretty impressive names too like: Insane Clown Posse, Tech N9ne, Do Or Die, etc. Bass Head Music makes such an impact with their music and live show, that they made it to the finals of Gorilla Music’s Battle of the Bands. The event takes place in May at local venue, The Miramar Theatre. Bass Head Music’s ultimate goal is to expand their movement as far as possible while having a positive influence on the local underground scene. At the end of last year, the group dropped a mixtape entitled The Munchies. It’s a collaborative effort between members J.D. The Chief and Phresh. The project contains about 21 tracks and features samples as well as original material. Click the jump for more details.

“Music & Weed”

The production here is a sample of “Massage Situation” by Flying Lotus. It’s a dope selection. There is a soft bass, some light sound effects, and a chill vibe. The hook is solid. The delivery is clear cut and the lyrics are memorable. The verses are fresh. Both J.D. and Phresh were on top of their game. They came with smooth flows and entertaining lyrics. They did a successful job of expressing how important music and smoking are to their lives. Some noteworthy lines include: “And you can say what you want. That’s just how I feel. Cause writing raps and rolling blunts are my hottest skills. Probably because I do em both frequently. And when they ask why, I’ll tell em its the chief in me. It’s Bass Head all day until the day I die. We keep on partying and letting the confetti fly.” That’s some clever rhyming right there and the lyrics have a nice light hearted tone to them. Overall, this was a winning track. The sample was smartly chosen and the content was high quality.

“Gucci, Gucci” Remix

This song samples the infamous track of the same name by female rapper Kreayshawn. The beat is sick. The deep knock, eerie sound effects, and street vibe make it ideal for sampling. The hook is also a sample from the original track. It would have been nice to hear J.D. or Phresh put their own spin on it but it’s not a big deal. The verses are hot. The fellas came with swagged out flows, slick wordplay, and ill rhymes. They leave no doubt in the listener’s mind that they know how to have a good time. A few memorable lines are: “I’m in one big room full of bad b–ches. You on one small couch with a couple averages. I got one big box full of fat Swishers and they stuffed to the max with that sticky, sticky. I get higher than a plane but I ain’t with that Taylor Gang. Look it’s survival of the fittest. And my clothes are custom made. I keep these hoes all amazed. They don’t know how to blaze. They be like J.D. can you roll this up? I be like you know what’s up.”  J.D. snapped on his verse, love it! In the end, this song is a banger and a favorite off of the tape.

“King Leon” Remix

This cut utilizes a song by the same name from the one and only Drake. It was an interesting choice. The production has a smooth tone, some weird background sounds, and an intense vibe. There is no hook, just a transition of sorts from Phresh’s verse to J.D.’s part. It was a clever way to make the change. The verses are excellent. The duo came with commanding flows, sharp wordplay, and serious rhymes. The light fun elements of the previous cuts are long gone. The fellas are just ripping the mic and flexing their skills on this one. Striking lines include: “How high can I get. Such a f–king fly guy. I don’t even shoot in cars. I do f–king fly bys. Good Fella at heart but still I’m such a wise guy. Man you couldn’t get more bread then me homie, so why try. I’m connected to that money like some kind of wi-fi. Mary Jane in body bags but she still look fine. No necro but it’s dead people on my mind all the time.” Again, J.D. went in on the track. His lines definitely make an impact on the listener. This track is another hit and another favorite.

“Get Funky”

This number is a Deep6ix Productions original. The production is quality. It contains a mid-tempo pace, various sound clips like quotes from movie character Austin Powers, and a cool retro vibe. The hook is fair. It is more or less just repetition of the title. The verses are satisfactory. The duo contributed easy going flows, witty wordplay, and fine rhymes. However, they could have been a little more lively and let loose a bit more with their lyrics. As is, the whole groovy theme of the song just doesn’t quite resonate like it should. All in all, this is a decent track. Could use a tad more soul but it’s still worthy of a listen.

**My Two Cents: The Munchies is a great mixtape. Phresh and J.D. chose tracks that fit their styles perfectly. Also, they came really strong lyrically. Though the title might be more of a call to fellow smokers, I think Hip-Hop lovers of all kinds will enjoy this project. It’s certainly one of the best I’ve heard so far this year. But please click that link and let your own ears do the talking. Catch up with J.D. via his Facebook page. And get more with Bass Head Music, including additional authentic tracks via their group page. -MinM
